Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to build houses with families in need.

What is Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, Inc.?

  • An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International: a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.
  • We seek to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

How does it work?

  • Through volunteer labor, donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside our homeowner (partner) families.
  • Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
  • Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans.
  • The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.

How are partner families selected?

  • Families in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates.
  • The affiliate’s family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the loan.
  • Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.

There are several ways to make a gift to Habitat for Humanity of Westchester. We will accept gifts of cash, stock & securities, in-kind donations of building materials or services or property. Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization (Federal ID # 13-3522732). Donations will be tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.

2Mail: You can forward a check made payable to Habitat for Humanity of Westchester. Please include your name, address, phone number and e-mail address on a separate sheet of paper

3Stocks and Securities: A popular way of making charitable donations is through appreciated marketable securities instead of cash. By making a gift of stock, the donor receives an income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities on the day the stock is sold. In addition, the donor will avoid paying capital gains tax, should he/she have sold the securities independently, thus gaining a double benefit.

4Phone: You can also call 914-636-8335 ext. 107 during business hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm) and our staff will be happy to assist you. You can simply make a pledge over the phone and forward your payment or you can charge a gift to your major credit card.

5Wills, Estates and Trusts: Remember Habitat for Humanity of Westchester in your will as a Bequest. There are several ways to accomplish this: by establishing gifts of charitable trusts and annuities, life insurance, IRA's, tangible personal property, closely held stock, or remainder interest in a home. We will work closely with your financial advisor to tailor your charitable gift according to your specifications. All of these contributions result in tax-savings for you and/or your heirs.

Habitat for Humanity has embarked on purchasing empty foreclosed homes and turning them around quickly with your help for Veterans' families who served in Iraq or Afghanistan.  "We were so happy when we heard that you were taking time out to help veterans and their families live the American Dream.  I just want to make my family proud, provide for them, and give them a better life, and I think you can help me do that" stated a veteran who served in Iraq and hopes to have a Habitat home.  Your donation can help purchase supplies, or your company, cogregation, or family foundation can help us purchase foreclosed homes and turn what was once a crisis into a positive for those who protect our lives everyday.  For more information email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Collegiate Challenge

Take the plunge into Westchester County's Collegiate Challenge. Students spend one week working in partnership with Habitat, the local community and partner families to help eliminate poverty housing in the area.

Collegiate Challenge trip may be the best school break trip you will ever have. Not only do you help people in need—it is also fun! Groups of five or more are eligible.
