The Greenest Downtown in America - New Rochelle
Monday, 25 February 2008
The GREENEST DOWNTOWN IN AMERICA – New Rochelle

Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is introducing initiatives to make New Rochelle the greenest downtown in America. As well as dialoging with other Westchester downtowns with affordable condos as a key component.

A green design team has been created by Habitat for Humanity of Westchester to design real affordable condos in New Rochelle and Westchester.

Starting March 15th a trolley service will be introduced monthly and increased to help assist with making New Rochelle the greenest downtown in America. This trolley will transport people from the North end the South end encouraging people to leave their cars and come downtown.  SPONSORS NEEDED.

Other green initiatives will include the following:

  • Making a Green resource center at Habitat headquarters. LEEDS info, lighting, energy savings, NYSERDA, etc.
  • Starting an alternative transportation club where bicycles, Pedi cabs and trolleys will be introduced.
  • Looking to increase solar energy and wind energy for example capturing wind energy on Division Street, and having solar panels on commercial and residential buildings
  • Recycling initiatives in the downtown.
  • Changing alternative lighting for businesses and residents and creating real affordable housing, condos with our Green Design Team of architects, complementing luxury housing and creating mixed long term stake holders.

During a new time of urban population increasing and people thinking about our earth resources, we believe the time is now to implement these initiatives.  Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is part of an international organization with green expertise.
